REGIONAL WINE
Historically, France's largest producer
of table wine, the region now produces an excellent range
of quality wines, mainly red, as well as sweet wines including
Banyuls, Muscat and Rivesaltes and sparkling white Blanquette
de Limoux.
Main wine regions - Collioure and Banyuls,
Côtes de Roussillon, Côtes de Roussillon Villages,
Fitou, Corbières, Minervois, Coteaux de Languedoc
including St Chinian, Costières du Gard.
A warm and sunny climate helps create
generously alcoholic fruity wines. Main grape varieties
include Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier (white), Muscat
(dessert wine).
