Although Le P’tit Poirier (Little Peartree) seems to be “far from the madding crowd” there is a choice of pleasures nearby - as it is near the chateaux & vineyards of the Loire Valley & has easy access to the charming market town of Saumur, famous for its sparkling wine and its equestrian events. Also within easy reach are the renowned vineyards of Chinon & Bourgueil, with their own colourful weekly markets. Famous chateaux such as Ussé (of Sleeping Beauty fame) Azay-le –Rideau & many others are good places to visit. Also within easy reach is Fontevraud Abbey, the final resting place of Richard the Lionheart.
The nearest main cities are Tours, approx 45 mins (flights from Stansted with Ryanair), Nantes, approx 90 mins (airport served by East Midlands or Manchester flights) and Angers, approx 20 mins (our nearest airport, flights from Southampton with Flybe). Le Mans is also within easy reach, approx 50 mins, for racing enthusiasts.
There is good access from ferry ports at Caen, Le Havre or Cherbourg with the A 85 motorway junction 2 at Longué only 10 mins drive from the cottage.
Accommodation
The cottage is very well equipped, with a beamed French style kitchen complete with full size gas cooker, dishwasher, microwave & original stone fireplace. There is a cosy lounge, again with beams and fire place with log burner. This has 3 cosy sofas & a dining table to seat 6 for those cooler evenings in Autumn or Winter when you may wish to dine indoors. For al-fresco dining there is a sunny, south facing patio with charcoal BBQ, garden furniture & sun loungers.
The cottage has a newly re-fitted bathroom, with large walk-in shower, plus an additional W.C in the small utility room where there is also a washing machine.
Upstairs there are 2 charming bedrooms with exposed beams. One bedroom has a comfortable double bed, whilst the other room (unclosed) has both a double & a single bed. Both have ample storage for clothes etc. Linen can be provided as extra.
As the cottage has a fairly steep wooden staircase to the bedrooms it is not really suitable for small children or people with limited mobility!
No pets.
LOCAL AREA
The whole area is ideal for leisurely cycle rides, walking or even golf with several courses nearby; there is a good open-air swimming pool at nearby Longue-Jumelles (10-15mins) & a lake & horse riding facilities in nearby villages.
Wine enthusiasts will be in heaven - wine tastings are offered everywhere! - and there are also many good restaurants within easy reach, plus the bars & cafes of Saumur.
Should you prefer to relax “chez vous”at Le P’tit Poirier there is an excellent supermarket at Longué, approx 10 mins drive. You can then take advantage of the well equipped kitchen & the BBQ on the sunny patio, and on those lovely summer evenings, you can star gaze or even look for comets in the clear night skies.
A stay at Le P’tit Poirier is all about rest, relaxation & restoring those batteries!
